Illyria CK (For Sale)

Illyria (2018) is a sweet,  energetic, strong moving Friesian mare with excellent bloodlines and a great start in her training. Videos of Illyria are on my website at Checkerboardfarms.com.

Illyria is under saddle and worked in our arena and on the residential trails of Norco, Ca. She has not been bred but should not have any problem getting pregnant. She has been dewormed, given inoculations, traveled and been exposed to other locations, arenas, and environments. She has been ponied and hand walked through the “trails” in Norco, CA, which are basically dirt paths on the sides of streets. Walking down these paths acclimated Illyria to barking dogs body slamming the trail fences, motorized lawnmowers, motorcycles, scooters, hot rods, trash trucks, etc. Even emus, llamas and camels are not unheard of.

Further, she’s used to covered, 12×16 stalls, being in larger covered corrals, arenas, or large turn outs with other mares.

Illyria’s training is dressage oriented as far as giving into pressure and moving off the leg. She knows how to do turns on the forehand and leg yields at the walk (working on the trot), backing up, but we really don’t think in terms of levels. I’m assuming Illyria would be working towards training level. The resident trainer has a bad back, so canter is difficult for her. Our focus is on manners, correct carriage and building the muscles and the mind to be safe and enjoyable for the rider.

Illyria is not particularly spooky. Feisty but not spooky. She’s pretty solid as far as riding goes and holds her ground if something bothers her. But she IS a mischievous goofball. When all the girls are being brought in from pasture to be haltered and put in their stalls, Illyria is always the last to be caught because she’s prancing around all the staid and boring mares, cavorting like a filly. When she’s the last one left, she prances a few more times, kicking up her heels, and then she comes over to go in her stall. Really quite cute. 😉

Anyways, her humor probably comes from her grandfather, Wander352, well known for his playful antics. Illyria’s playful side will keep her humans on their toes and therefore she would need an experienced rider or trainer/coach supervisor for an amateur.

If you check out the videos on my website, you can see the quality of work being done with Illyria, as well as the other mares from our farm, Whisper and Renaissance, (already sold.) The work is solid, though sporadic, due to time and expenses, but it’s built from the ground up. She will continue training and will make an excellent show and pleasure horse.

We believe she would excel at dressage, including western dressage,  and hope she can find a great home where she can do her job, have babies and be someone’s forever partner. She has not been to an inspection so she is still in the foalbook with the registry.  However, with her conformation and movement, we believe she would do very well if/when presented.  As for bloodlines, Illyria is a granddaughter of Wander 352 with the special Norbert 444 on the topline.  Her dam is Avelon ster, who has produced a number of excellent offspring from different quality stallions like Sypke, Sape and Nanning.  With her strong movement and excellent temperament, Illyria will be a great addition for your Friesian breeding program or as your very first Friesian!

(SOLD) Whisper CK – The two Friesian mares are full sisters, born in 2013 and 2015. Due to time and economics, they have been mannered, worked on the ground, desensitized to surcingles, weight, stimuli, etc. Renaissance is under saddle and Whisper is just started under saddle. Neither have been bred but should not have any problem getting pregnant. They have been wormed, given inoculations, traveled and been exposed to other locations, arenas, environments. They have been ponied and hand walked through the “trails” in Norco, which are on the side of streets acclimating them to barking dogs body slamming fences, motorized lawnmowers, motorcycles, scooters, hot rods, trash trucks, etc. Even emus, llamas and camels are not unheard of.

Our resident trainer is dressage oriented but we really don’t think in terms of levels. I’m assuming Renaissance would be working towards training level. Our focus is on manners, correct carriage and building the muscles and the mind to be safe and enjoyable for the rider. These are energetic horses and would require an experience rider or trainer/coach supervisor for an amateur.

As you can see from the video, the full sisters do have a similar look and for sure I get confused and sometimes even the trainer has to look twice to make sure we have the one we are looking for. They have exceptional, strong movement and would be an excellent driving pair as they match very well. Both have lots of ground driving training.

Further they are used to covered, 12×16 stalls, being in larger covered corrals, arenas, or large turn out with other mares.

Renaissance, under saddle does everything shown in the video clips. She is walk/ trot in the arena. She moves around obstacles and has been ridden by herself and with other horses around the streets of Norco. She may startle, but she does not normally fall apart and lose her mind. We believe she would excel at dressage and hope she can find a great home where she can do her job, have babies and be someone’s forever partner. She has been to the keuring and her linear score was very strong and received a 3rd premium. We did take her again and those judges weren’t as impressed. Time, money and COVID have prevented us from taking many of our young horses to recent keurings.

Whisper has all the ground training and is just getting used to a rider. She has a great temperament and lots of hand walking on the trails. Whisper has not been to a keuring, either as a foal or an adult but we do believe she would do well. Both she and her older sister have great ground manners, good minds and are people oriented.

Please let me know if there are further questions.

Anyanka CK – Friesian Mare for Sale by Mintse

(SOLD) Anya is a 2008 mare, born in June.  She is sired by Mintse out of a Wander daughter and is fancy, happy and lots of fun.    Anya’s dam is 3rd premie stambook with full papers, including lots of preferent status in her pedigree.  Anya will be of medium size and is a very pretty mare.  She will probably mature less than sixteen hands but should be tall enough for star.  She has a beautiful head and conformation and is already growing lots of hair.  She has a very Friesian look and should do well whether your discipline is riding or driving.  Her movement is very strong and she is balanced at all three gaits.  She has had lots of people time so she does all those ground

tasks such as cross ties, grooming, clipping, hoof trimming and of, course, a good sport around shots and worming.  She is bold and curious and should be an exciting addition whether this is your first Friesian or you are building your Friesian herd.  Anya was started under saddle in June, 2011 and is taking to her riding tasks like a pro.  She is already “herding” our other mares or yearling colt while our trainer is riding her, brandishing a long lunge whip — which is one of our trainer’s

techniques of getting young horses acclimated and accepting of activity under saddle.  She has also been started on our ‘Norco Trails’ which is basically riding around the block but that includes lots of barking dogs body slamming fences, trash trucks, motorcycles and even charging emus!  We think Anya will be an excellent choice for an experienced amateur rider or professional who is petite in size and who wants their forever friend for pleasure riding; lower level dressage and/or driving.  You can see all our sales videos on You Tube at our account:  CheckerboardfarmsCA.
